Orange peel is a spray-applied finish characterized by rounded droplets and shallow depressions resembling citrus skin. Its appearance ranges from fine, closely spaced droplets to heavier splatter depending on nozzle size, air pressure and compound viscosity. Identifying the existing droplet diameter and coverage density is essential because two surfaces described as “orange peel” can look noticeably different beside one another.
Knockdown begins with sprayed droplets but adds a second operation after the material partially sets. A wide knockdown knife lightly flattens the raised peaks, producing irregular islands with broader, smoother faces than orange peel. Pattern size depends on the original spray application and the timing of the knockdown pass, so both characteristics must be reproduced when evaluating an existing surface.
Stipple texture is mechanically patterned rather than defined solely by spray droplets. Brushes, rollers or specialized texture tools can leave peaks, repeating impressions or irregular raised profiles in the applied material.
