A fire separation is a construction assembly that restricts fire spread between adjoining spaces, while a firewall is a more specifically regulated type of fire separation with additional structural and continuity requirements. The terms are therefore not interchangeable. Commercial drawings identify where each required separation occurs and its required fire-resistance rating, allowing the gypsum system to be matched to the actual building requirement.
A fire-resistance rating expresses how long an assembly satisfies specified performance criteria during standardized fire testing. A fire-rated partition containing a doorway depends on the complete opening protective rather than gypsum terminating around an ordinary frame.
